Common printing questions

Find the right answer quickly.

Open a question below for a concise explanation. For project-specific advice, our print team is ready to help.

Files & Prepress

What is bleed?

Bleed is artwork that extends beyond the finished trim edge—commonly by 0.125 inch. It prevents unwanted white edges when the piece is cut.

What image resolution should I use?

For most commercial printing, images should be approximately 300 PPI at their final printed size. Enlarging a small image can reduce effective resolution.

What makes a PDF print-ready?

A print-ready PDF uses the correct finished size, bleed, color settings, image resolution, fonts, page order, and overprint settings. See Prepress Made Simple.

Paper & Materials

What is the difference between text and cover stock?

Text stock is flexible and commonly used for interior pages, brochures, and catalogs. Cover stock is thicker and more rigid, making it suitable for covers, postcards, and business cards.

Is 100 lb text the same as 100 lb cover?

No. Text and cover stocks use different manufacturing basis sizes, so 100 lb cover is much thicker than 100 lb text. See the complete Paper Weight Guide.

Gloss, silk, matte, or uncoated?

Gloss emphasizes color and shine. Silk offers a smooth, lower-glare finish. Matte is subdued and elegant. Uncoated paper feels natural and is usually easier to write on.

Finishing & Binding

Saddle-stitch or perfect binding?

Saddle-stitching uses staples through the fold and works well for thinner booklets and catalogs. Perfect binding uses an adhesive spine and is better for thicker publications with a square, printable spine.

What specialty finishes are available?

Options may include foil, dimensional varnish, Spot UV, embossing, die cutting, lamination, folding, and specialty coatings. Availability depends on stock, design, quantity, and production method.

Can finishing affect the schedule?

Yes. Binding, coatings, die cutting, foil, and other finishing steps require additional production time. Share your delivery date early so the complete schedule can be planned.

Color & Quality

What is the difference between CMYK and Pantone color?

CMYK combines four process inks to reproduce full-color artwork. Pantone or spot colors use premixed inks for precise brand colors or special applications.

Why does printed color differ from my screen?

Screens emit RGB light while printing reflects light from ink on paper. Monitor calibration, paper, coating, ink, and lighting can all affect appearance.

What does G7 qualification mean?

G7 is a color-management methodology used to achieve a consistent visual appearance across different printing devices and processes. It supports predictable neutrals, tonality, and color reproduction.

Catalogs & Direct Mail

How do catalog covers affect page count?

A separate catalog cover accounts for four pages: front cover, inside front, inside back, and back cover. Those four pages are deducted from the total when calculating interior pages.

Can MegaColorUSA print and mail the same project?

Yes. Printing, data processing, addressing, kitting, mailing, and fulfillment can be coordinated by one accountable team.

What information is needed for a direct-mail quote?

Provide the finished size, quantity, page count, paper, color, finishing, mailing-list status, target delivery window, and any sorting, personalization, or fulfillment requirements.

Ordering & Delivery

How do I get the most accurate quote?

Share the finished size, quantity, page count, paper, colors, printing sides, binding, finishing, artwork status, shipping destinations, and required delivery date.

What if my project is not listed in the online shop?

Request a custom quote. MegaColorUSA can recommend the right production method and specifications for projects that do not fit a standard online configuration.

How long will production take?

Turnaround depends on specifications, quantity, proof approval, finishing, mailing, and delivery. Confirm the schedule before placing a time-sensitive order.
